“Peanut butter and jelly again,” complained the factory worker for the tenth day in a row.

Jim, his friend and co-worker, was tired of hearing him complain and asked, “Who makes your lunch anyway? Maybe you should ask for something different.”

To which the peanut butter and jelly eater said, “Oh, I make my own lunch.”

Are you living your life this way? Eating the same old thing and hating it? Experiencing the same day, day in and day out bored with your existence? I was.

I was working at a job that didn’t satisfy me. Every day I was hoping for more exciting work where I’d get to use the skills and education I’d gained, but every day it was the same old unchallenging work. Even when a new project came around, I was not assigned to a lead role.

I was frustrated and angry at management, so I complained to my mom and my friends about it. I didn’t know I had the power to change things. I didn’t know that I could have the challenges and work I wanted. So I kept on going to the same job doing the same work, feeling stuck and unhappy. Until one day, I read something that made so much sense.

“If you want to be accepted, accept yourself. If you want to be acknowledged, acknowledge yourself.”

In reading this, I instantly understood and knew I had the power within me to change what I felt I lacked in my life. But not only that, this statement gave me permission to do it.

What is your peanut butter and jelly sandwich of life? What are you unhappy with but keep accepting without question or the understanding that you have the power to make a change?
